MATTHAU'S TOURDIARY
FESTIVALS, FINLAND, Summer 2006 >>
June - August, 2006

It´s time to take off our boots for a few months because ladies and girls, the tour is over.

Right now I´m trying to figure out what to do on weekends because you know... we´ve been on the road for quite some time. I already miss touring- sitting on a dirty and smelly bus for hours, listening to records, playing the show, meeting our fans, porn, tons of cigarettes and being with the guys. That´s what it´s all about.

We´ve been working on new material lately and we have somewhat like 14 new songs- "Born a whore", "Rotten to the core" and "Leave me dead", to name just a few. I guess the new material is gonna be more in your face but no one knows what it´s gonna sound like.

In November we´ll be headed for Germany and Italy (3 weeks) to promote `Mental Circus´ but Finland is gonna see us back on tour in 2007 with the new shit. Within a year we did 87 shows so it´s time to take a little break

I guess it´s been a while since last time I gave you a report so obviously a lot has happened in the mean time. Our summer was okay- could have been better, could have been worse but we have learnt to expect nothing so I´m pretty happy.

For us the summer started perfectly. We performed on a football field with only a handful of people in the audience and it was freezing out there. We basically couldn´t move our fingers so I guess we played a little sloppy that night. The next show was different, though. Kivenlahtirock was the first "real" summer festival (for us) and it really was a beautiful day people running naked on the beach. I remember, I asked the girls in the audience to show their breasts but I got no reply which was a good thing since say 80% of the audience was underaged.

At mid-summer I took my cousin on board for a few shows and it was a gas. We shared a hotel room and had a great time. I guess we broke the law a little at the hotel room. The other guys also decided to burn our sauna stove down (the one we used on the `Sauna päälle!´ tour) in front of a court house. They simply wanted to see how long it takes for the police to arrive. They never showed up.

Rovaniemirock with McQueen (UK) was a gas! Those girls are real sweet and I think we came along well and why wouldn´t we. After the show I was taken back to the hotel so I missed the afterparty at the backstage area. Aleksi almost got thrown out at one of the night clubs in Rovaniemi after attacking Alarik very violently but the security guy let him go when he heard who he was.

Aitoo saw us for the very first time. I was in awe seeing the place after ten years. I´ll never forget how I saved a girl from getting into a fight during Apulanta´s concert in 1997. She had red hair and some time later I found an add in Suosikki where she was looking for me. I never replied. Anyway, we were there filling in for Uniklubi.

Our spot at Tammerfest took place at Klubi with Private Line and McQueen. The place was sold out and we were thrilled to see many new faces in the audience. That night was ours.

Setting up our backline before concert at Kuopio Rockcock Masa notices that we had forgotten to bring my effect board with us. That was the first time we forgot something very important at our loft. I borrowed Jyrki K. Melartin´s (Popeda) chromatic tuner pedal and used the volume knob to create clean sound. Oh, and just for the record, it was my first appearance beardless since October 2005. We´re on our way becoming like The Rolling Stones with people joining us on stage. At Sunset Beach Party our friend Mr. Wahlroos (who organizes the festival) joined us on stage for a little blues and at Rockcock Wallu Valpio took over the lead guitar on `Autumn´. Popeda was on the bill after us at Rockcock and I almost missed their show doing an interview on the bus backstage but that´s okay because the girls were beautiful.

DBTL was cancelled because the organizer fucked up. They removed us because there was a summer theatre play nearby. They tried to convince us to perform acoustically and when we said no, they pulled the plug. Anyway, Paavo and I did a radio live there. We were playing some song live and I totally lost it. I started laughing hysterically because I remembered a good joke I heard earlier that day, but at least everybody in the audience was having a good time.

Välipuistorock in Lapua didn´t end up the way we planned it. Here´s what happened in a nutshell. We were playing an encore `Born a whore´ when I spotted two intoxicated guys in the front row giving us attitude (mid fingers). They behaved very disrespectfully. They kept going and one of them threw something towards Alarik and for me that was just too much. I put my guitar down and jumped into the audience and punched the other one in the face. The show was over. Then there was the police and all that but it ended up pretty well in the end. I probably over-reacted but I would definitely do it again. It´s a matter of respect.

Rock To The River in Imatra was to be our last show for now. After the concert we emptied a bottle of champagne because after all, this was an end of an era.

We also did three shows within 24 hrs this summer. All in all the summer was great and we really enjoyed doing what we do. Till the next time we say goodbye...
